First update in a long time, to all you non-readers out there I’m not dead or dismembered, just working 9 to 5 five days a week. Really gruelling.
I will also be resuming the photo updates on “TTLG”, so keep your eyes peeled.
Now on to the topic of today’s update:
Linux: The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything!
Well maybe not everything, but a damn lot (hey, even the server that this website is hosted on runs one of the Linux distros). Having got a shiny new laptop for University, I though, the hell with Microsoft, open source all the way. Lucky for me, Ubuntu had released at the start of June the latest version of the OS (Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake). I happily downloaded the Dapper release of Kubuntu and loaded it onto my laptop.
Having disposed of the copy of Windows XP that came pre-installed, I have launched into the open source odyssey and I am loving every minute of it. I have yet to encounter any “show-stoppers” and there was great support for my hardware out of the box (Acer Aspire 3624). In addition, any minor problems were sorted out with the help of the Ubuntu forums and IRC channel (#ubuntu @ irc.freenode.net).
In the arena of software, I have found an open source replacement for every program that I used under windows. Also, I am free of the viruses and spyware that so infests Windows machines today.
Ubuntu is a great, first-time-Linux friendly distribution that I would recommend for any of you Windows users that are fed up with all the crap Windows can throw your way or have a spare computer and some time.
