My new Super 8 Camera: Elmo 1000S Macro

I am excited to report that yesterday I purchased an Elmo 1000S Macro. It is a fairly high-end (at it introduction, it was priced at around 500 pounds (roughly $1000 CAD), I picked it up for $125 off a former Ryerson film student) with everything that I could test without actually shooting and developing a role of film.

I do have several gripes though, but they have to do with the camera model, not specifically to the one I purchased. Firstly, it does not have the ability to shoot single frames. While not being essential, it allows for more creative freedom. This was fixed in the later models that Elmo produced, like my personal dream, the Elmo 1018R (single frame, manual exposure, many different film speeds, variable shutter). My second gripe is related to the first, that the remote has only on and off, so even if the camera had the ability to do single frames, I could not as there would be too much camera shake. There is also the issue of the built in meter reading Ektachrome as 40 ASA instead of 64, but that can be overcome with an external light meter and setting the exposure manually.

All in all, those were rather minor issues that I will look for next time I am in the market for a camera. Thanks to Cat for coming out with me to help test out the camera.

To further my chances of getting all the desired features, I will be attending the flea markets at Downsview. If anyone is interested in coming with me, send me an email at andrew@aehunter.net.

All Hail King George II (or The 2006 Milltary Commissions Act) & UbuntuWorld

On October 18 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law an act that would allow “unlawful enemy combatants” to be declared either by a court of law or military tribunal. This seems OK, military tribunal, that is like a court of law but in the military, right?

Here’s the rub, a military tribunal consits of people in the military. Who is the supreme commander of the military in the United States? George W. Bush! The implications of this are that effectively George W. Bush can declare any one he wants, US citizen or not, an “unlawful enemy combatant”.

If you are declared an “unlawful enemy combatant”, things that we consider necessary for a fair trial, the right to know your accuser, the right to know what charages are being brought against you and the right to know what evidence is being used to convict you (all of these rights and more are part of Habius Corpus, a concept fundamental to what most of the western world would call democracy), would not apply.

Recently SABDFL (Mark Shuttleworth) bloged about holding UbuntuWorld in the United States. In responce to this, Stephen Herman wrote this blog entry expressing his concerns over holding UbuntuWorld in the United States.

I agree with the commenters in that just holding UbuntuWorld in the US does not support the current ruling regime, but in light of recent developments (see the opening on the Military Commissions Act), I will not visit the United States. This is a simple, and some would say ineffective, protest, but it is easily do able (try travelling on a student budget) and it appeals to my moral sense.

Cool with Kate

Random cool feature of Kate and Konqueror, if I FTP to this site and open a file (say style.css) and click save, it will upload the modified file to the server.

This may be true for other apps, I guess I will need to test this out.

I am an idiot

Gosh am I an idiot.

First, I was using an old version of the scheme Fork. So I got the new scheme and made the necessary modifications. Turns out that the white space that I hated so much was in fact in the header image. DOH!

The next step is figuring out why the rollingarchives works sometimes and not others.

A Domain Switch

I have switched the domain of Wander Lost from andrewhunterproductions.com to aehunter.net. andrewhunterproduction.com now redirects to the Andrew Hunter Productions tab on the menu.

I made this change to reflect the changing nature of the site. Andrew Hunter Productions is my “productions company”, so I thought it best to have the web address reflect this. In addition, when I switched to dreamhost, I got a free domain registration or transfer, so I snapped up aehunter.net (as this is a personal site). I had aehunter.net mirroring this site for some time and I thought this time was as good as any for the switch.

If you notice any problems with the site, email me at webmaster [at] aehunter.net or leave a comment.
